About MJ's Design

From home interiors to movie sets, from the East Village to Vinalhaven, MJ Schepers hones her trade with an intuitive sense about client styles forged with a gift for visualizing every detail of a project long before ite takes shape. In addition to understanding and selecting colors, fabrics, floor coverings, furniture and home accessories, MJ is also a gifted seamstress, unusual in the decorating field.

At an early age, Schepers, one of seven children, was often called upon by her parents to help in their home renovation business. In high school, she worked on set designs for theatrical productions and later studied design at William Woods College.

Her movie set design credentials include "In the Bedroom," with actress Sissy Spacek; "What Lies Beneath," with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer; "Thinner," with Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis; among others.

Whether working with an opera singer or a school teacher, MJ notes: "My style is about the personality of my client in their home and not necessarily what's in style. Becasue my clients are very concerned about supporting New England craftsmen, I buy my custom pieces from Maine Cottage furniture, Thomas Moser furniture, Dovetail and Chilton."
